LEGO Van Halen
Concert Display

by Scott Pachunka, LOLUG

Welcome!

The LEGO Van Halen Concert display is a custom MOC (My Own Creation) built as a tribute to the world's greatest guitarist, Eddie Van Halen and my favorite band Van Halen. This display is continously evolving and growing each time it is displayed to the public.

Brick Days Omaha (March 2024) is its third public display. It features LEGO respresentations of the band playing on stage with working lights and video screens. Eddie Van Halen is playing his famous 'Franken-Strat' guitar. David Lee Roth is up-front as lead singer. Alex Van Halen on drums and Michael Anthony on base.

Backstage, you will find Sammy Hagar, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Valerie Bertinelli partying with other backstage guests. The stage crew is busy loading or unloading equipment. In the main arena you can see the sound booth among the hundreds of screaming fans.

Lights and Video

The lights were just basic light sets I found online that had the type of flashing option I wanted to give the impression of a concert. The led lights are powered by USB and connected to 1x3 plates allowing me to snap then under another brick.

The video screens were purchased from Brick Stuff and they offer a variety of video, lights, and other accessories for your LEGO builds. The screens I use have USB storage on them where you drag a video file. When the screen is provided basic power in my build, it plays the video in a loop. I made each video myself, ran it through their software to covert it to a favorable format, then uploaded it to the screen.

The screens and lights really bring the display to life along with sound that I provide from an external device.

What's New?

The most notably upgrade since, Brick Days Omaha 2023 (and since November) is the change in the size of the display. The width of display has doubled (2 base plates) while the depth has been reduced by 25% (1 baseplate). The concert venue has been expanded on each side with stands for more concert attendees. This also gives us a better view to see who is attending rather than just seeing the back of minifigure heads.

More minifigures and a few more stories have been added. The Hulk has bust through a wall to literally break into the concert.

Bill & Ted are on their Excellent Adventure hoping to recruit Eddie Van Halen to be in their band "Wyld Stallyns".

In the spirit of NASCAR, campers are watching the show from top of their RV.

History

This display has been evolving and growing since November of 2021 when it was initially assembled (version 1 anyway). Prior to that pieces were collected to build minifigures parts that resembled the band members and others. LEGO parts were collected and assembled to build the initial stage. Special thanks to Greg Mitchell for painting the signature 'Franken-Strat' guitar used by LEGO Eddie Van Halen. It was not truly Van Halen until this piece was added. The stage was rebuilt severals times to make it bigger and bigger. Collecting minifigures for the crowd was more of a challenge that anticipated and still continues to this day.

Display History

  1. Brick Days Omaha April 2023
  2. This was the first showing of the display. It featured just over 200 minifigures. It was 4 baseplates deep and 2 wide. The original line up was featured with David Lee Roth up front with music from the first albums though 1984 was played in the back ground.

  3. Brick Days Lincoln November 2023
  4. Around 30+ minifigures were collected and the front gate was improved. It was 4 baseplates deep and 2 wide. Sammy Hagar was center stage and music from that era was played.

  5. Brick Days Omaha March 2024
  6. This was the first showing of the display. It features about 289 minifigures. It was expanded to 4 baseplates width and reduced in depth by one. The original line up is back with David Lee Roth up front with music from the first albums though 1984 was played in the back ground.

What's Next

What does the future hold? Larger stage and arena? More Figs? Retire the display? More Lights or maybe motion? To be continued (Stay Tuned)...
